Currently in Haida Gwaii, this is a diary of my times spent and the people that I meet. To most it will be a surf update, to others a spiritual assessment, and definitely fun to all.

The times for new roman

Another quick vidya of some surfing at Agate beach on a low tide. Beginning to feel a bit vain with all these videos of myself, but I hope to create something with all this footage, perhaps an instructional video or just a promo for the shop. Whatever the case, it has been fun to see these little snippets and learn a little bit from it. Other than the howling winds, life has been pretty mellow. Surf has been here, but just not that big lately. Looking very forward to the trip down south with some friends into some warm surf. Until then, I have to give a little grief to the current journalists.... what in the hell does zeitgeist mean? When did people start using this word on a daily basis? And 'commodification'? I heard it twice in the same sentence on the CBC today. I know that language is used to provide a more descriptive term, but can't we use simple words to generate a simple language and a precise thought? I know I'm a hippo-critter sometimes using larger words, but I have to wonder what these new trendy language words mean and how long they will last. I guess I'll recline on my chesterfield to reflect on the fact that I should probably read more and get caught up with the times new roman.

Hail to the bus driver maaaannn....

Sweet ride huh! I do part time gig as the pre-school bus driver for a program called 'Fresh Start' where parents and young children show up at the school to do some healthy activities and skoolin'. Been really cute to see these little bundles of pink climb on the bus and some great parents really taking time to make sure their littla jaa'daa (girls) are off to a good fresh start. After the school year this will be full of fishermen and tourists and a very different type of schedule. We have all-inclusive tours of the islands for anyone interested and just google Northwest Recreation to find us.

Put a cork in it

Little 'corks' as I call them. Wet as hell on the outside, but dry as a popcorn fart inside. This beach wood rolls up with the big tides and hits the shore for a lucky beach bum to find. Buzz it up with my new/awesome saw and I gots heat for a week. It's really quite fun to wander around the high tide mark searching for this wood that's probably been at sea for years, nice of it to show up on Haida Gwaii during the cold snap. It's a fun little hunt tracking down the best stuff. This is yellow cedar and burns super nice. We also find a lot of fir that burns equally well. It all looks the same on the outside, brown, and smells like a combination of ass and low tide, similar to my wetsuit, but once you take a hatchet to the shell, a great color and smell comes out of them. Pine is great to find, but quite rare. Red cedar has a scent out of this world, but not really a desirable wood for the stove. Whatever the case, very nice to be somewhat self sufficient with wood gathering and food gathering, and it really makes the trip to the beach, and the burning of the fossil fuels a more reasonable venture and a lot more of a justification of it all. Today has some fantastic swell and looks like a couple more days of it. At the hieasy with a schwack of folks from port and more and more new faces on the wave. Must be that prick with the surf shop in town telling everyone where to go. Wink.

I'm completely naked in this picture

minus the wetsuit.... Another short, but fun ride in some tiny waves. I just ordered 3 of these cameras and man are we going to make some great footage in some of the big shit we surf in the winter. It will no doubt turn out to be a good learning tool to see what you're doing on the waves, foot position, arms... do I look good? Seriously, does my ass look fat in this neoprene... nothing fits like a wetsuit. Except... NO WETSUIT!!! Yup, just booked a flight to Mexico in February and it's gonna be fucking awesome. My first time ever without a wetsuit and into some great surf. It's going to be margaritas with the senioritas as Cory and I are taking our respective ol' ladies down to the land of sand and surf minus the snow. If any tips on Sayulita or Mexico in general, let me know.

A little shout out to the lady from Cleveland that emailed me. Funny to think that this little blog thingy that I did for my mum and as a reflection of my times spent on this wonderful world of ours that people would happen upon it from another country. Apparently you can find pictures of me on the internet, yikes, I thought I already appologized for that and it was supposed to be time served... anyhoo, If any other people I have not enjoyed the pleasure of meeting yet, or perhaps was unfortunate enough to meet, are reading this, I would appreciate a note, comment, five dollars, whatever you like. Good to hear from new friends and old.

You're such a keyhole

A winter wonderland covers and changes the landscape so quickly. This road has so many fond memories and anticipations of great things to come. Let it snow, drink em slow, have a go...

Sweet ride into sea life

My buddy Cory lean't me his board and camera for this sweet ride into sea life. It really was a nice mellow day of knee-highs in some coooold water. 32 Air 42 Water Brrrrr...

Swell has been coming in at times with usual swell pushing up to chest high at least once a week due to the lows bringing in straight on westerly, if not northerly. With webcasting and idea gathering in this net-age, information = fun, and it sure helps in searching surf.

Looking forward to a few more mellow days of contemplating life in the quietness of the waves. What was that resolution again? Doesn't the UN have a resolution? Should do that one for something fresh.

It was really cool the other day between sets and noticing the absence of sound between the waves at a really nice interval of 16sec. or so. So cool to have it a little more regularly. Gotta go and grab a few more... and get some more wood... and do my taxes... awfff....

What?? No wetsuit

Can't believe this kook out in it with no wetsuit! We've had some reeeeally cold conditions for at least a month as has the rest of the country from the sounds of things. This area is really not used to this type of winter wonderland with the snow, but we make due with some other activities to keep busy, like goofing off. With the cold weather has come predominately NE wind or the 'Arctic outflow' and some brrrrrrr. Sure wish I had a front window. My little bitch about delivery of goods to the islands. We have no airmail available. UPS takes 4 weeks from Vancouver and god help anyone that orders something from the co-op. I would imagine my children will inherit that order. Anyways, until then, split more wood and feed the big iron machine. Looking forward to some sun in the coming months. Got my flight booked to Victoria in February, and ready to make some plans to a little further south as well. Well, all for now, off to hit the beach for some more wood this afternoon. Have a good weekend!

Drop in anytime...

Here is a classic tale told on tape of the consequences of 'dropping in' on someone out in the wave. It was all funny and laughter in these tiny, but fun waves. We surfed for another hour and then fist-fought in the parking lot. Good times.
