Currently in Haida Gwaii, this is a diary of my times spent and the people that I meet. To most it will be a surf update, to others a spiritual assessment, and definitely fun to all.

Busier than a one legged midget in an arse kicking contest

Well, it's official. I've got a fucking job. I know I should be excited of the new prospects, but driving away from a perfectly good wave is not an easy thing to do. Alas, the waves are almost gone for the season, so the time to venture into the cerebral active zone is now. Actually, life is pretty good.
So, I've got a contract for the summer from HRDC to run a training camp for people interested in working at the fishing lodges. For those unaware, Langara Island on the most northwesterly point of Haida Gwaii has a host of lodges that cater to the very, very rich and famous who want to catch trophy salmon. These lodges charge anywhere from $1000 a day and up! And why do you ask? Quite simply, every pacific salmon (oooohhh let's say 100 million or so) pass by this very island en route to their spawning grounds somewhere between Alaska and California. No kidding, every single one of them. Good fishing you think?
Anyhoo, we're training these young adults (all Haida) in basic career skills, giving them the certifications necessary, and then sending them to the island for 5 weeks training. All of this is paid for, so quite a good gig for them... and for me! I really have gelled with the guys and gals and am enjoying my time at the college.
On top of this, I have also entered into a partnership with the gentleman pictured above, coincidentally named... Michael. We're running the local airport bar and restaurant during the tourist season which is looking to be very lucritive. Although I've been experiencing 16 hour days most of the time, I'm thinking of my month in costa rica this november and the pain seems to go away.
This on top of still coaching AND my play rehearsals 3X a week is really getting to be a busy life. A lot busier than the beach bum routine I'm accustomed to. So, the plan is to work it this summer and be able to relax for next surf season. I'm guessing it's going to happen! Hope you all enjoy your summer to come. I'll see you in September.
