Currently in Haida Gwaii, this is a diary of my times spent and the people that I meet. To most it will be a surf update, to others a spiritual assessment, and definitely fun to all.

Sand, Surf and Snow?

Which one of these words is not like the other.... Man it was cold in the surf yesterday. First time I've ever surfed in snow I got to tell you. And it was crap surf too. Wind swells have really been off the last week, but I had to get some blood pumping and the paddle was good. After the paddle I decided to beach glean and had nearly no luck there either! Lots of butter clam shells, but no cockles or scallops washed up today. The weathervanes are starting to show up so that should be a good sign. I did manage to see quite a few moon snails which are the object of today's pic featured in front of a few resident mushrooms at my place.

These moon snails are pretty huge and eat clams and other sea creatures by burrowing a hole in the roof of the shell. I've never seen one up close, but these huge shells are all over the place. Between them and the banana slugs there seems to be no lack of the goo-factor.

I must sign off with a little Howa to the Masset Eagles Swim Club who pulled off the win in Terrace at the Developmental Swim Meet. The little guys managed to finish all their races and not get tooo many DQ's, so we won as a result of having the highest percentage of personal best times. It didn't hurt that half of these kids we pulled off the streets having never swum at a meet before, but they were all in to the game and stoked to be there. For those unaware, we are a day away from any major department store, so I'm guessing the hotsprings and shopping had some part to play in the fun as well. Nice job swimmers.
